Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service marks Fire Prevention Week Released: 8:46 a.m.

Winnipeg, October 4, 2010 - The Winnipeg Fire Department (WFD) is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Fire Prevention Week 2010 which takes place from October 3 to 9, 2010. Together with its partners, including the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the WFD is reaching out to citizens of all ages, particularly young people, to raise awareness of the importance of fire prevention.
WFD staff will be participating in a number of community events in connection with Fire Prevention Week this year. These include:
school events: a kick-off with the students of Principal Sparling School on Monday, October 4; and the "Great Canadian Fire Drill" at all schools and fire stations on Friday, October 8. Distributed "Fire Safety Starts with You" pamphlets for all K - 3 Classes in Winnipeg. Materials will be dropped off at divisional distribution centers for dispersal. Students can enter for a chance to win one of 4-Nintendo DS Gaming Systems.
public events: on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the WFD will have information booths at Winnipeg Canadian Tire locations;
media event: on Wednesday, October 6, the WFD will host fire fighter workshops
(Fire Ops 101) for the media at the Academy. Location 2546 McPhillips St.
Open House: an open house for all citizens, at local fire stations, on Saturday, October 9, 2010 from noon till 4:00 pm.
The theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week is "Smoke Alarms: A sound you live with." This year's campaign focuses on ways to keep your family and home safe from preventable fire.
