Winnipeg, October 6, 2010 - The City of Winnipeg is pleased to announce its first Career Symposium, which will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

The Career Symposium is our opportunity to showcase the wide range of careers available within the City of Winnipeg. Members of the public will have opportunities to learn about career options that may be of interest now or in the future.

The day is intended to target both our current and future recruitment needs.

The day will also be used to reach out to the community including high school and post secondary students, Aboriginal youth, Newcomers/Immigrants, and others to help people understand the benefits of working towards a career with the City.

As part of the day's activities, City departments will have interactive displays that will be staffed by employees from a variety of areas to speak about their professions and occupations. There will also be a "Speakers' Corner," featuring staff who will talk about their own unique and interesting career path.

The Symposium is free of charge and offers informational take-home materials and hands-on displays.

Changes to Recycling/Garbage Collection on Monday, October 11, 2010

Single-family homes
There will be no recycling or garbage collection on Monday, October 11. Collection will resume on Tuesday, October 12 – Day 3 on the five-day cycle.

Multi-family apartments
Recycling and garbage collection will continue as normally scheduled.

Brady Road Landfill hours of operation
Saturday, October 9 – 9:00 am to 5 pm
Sunday, October 10 – 9:00 am to 5 pm
Monday, October 11 – 5:30 am to 8 pm

Winnipeg Transit

Libraries

All Libraries are closed on Monday, October 11. Regular hours are in effect on Saturday, October 9 & Sunday, October 10. Visit: winnipeg.ca/library for library hours, program information and services.

Swimming Pools

All indoor pools are closed on Monday, October 11 except Pan Am Pool. Pan Am Pool is open 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. Regular hours are in effect for all indoor pools on Saturday, October 9 & Sunday, October 10.

Leisure Centres

All Leisure Centres are closed on Monday, October 11. Regular hours are in effect on Saturday, October 9 & Sunday, October 10. Please see the Leisure Guide or visit the City of Winnipeg website at Winnipeg.ca for Leisure Centre schedules.

Animal Services Agency

Closed Monday, October 11. Open normal weekend hours on Saturday October 9 & Sunday October 10 from 12:00 – 5:00 pm.

WINNIPEG - October 6, 2010 - The City of Winnipeg Archives, located at 380 William Avenue, is undergoing exterior renovations. The scope of the work will require the facility to be temporarily closed on Friday, October 8, 2010. It will reopen on Tuesday, October 12 following the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Renovations to the facility include:

• Installation of a universal access ramp
• Installation of a lift in the interior front vestibule
• Reinstallation of heritage fence

Washroom upgrades were completed in 2009.

The Carnegie Library, which now serves as the City of Winnipeg Archives, was opened in 1905 as the City's main library. It became the William Avenue Branch Library in the 1970's after construction of the Centennial (now Millennium) Library. In 1994, the branch library was closed and the building became the City of Winnipeg Archives.
