City of Winnipeg wins provincial award for OurWinnipeg
Second award received for city development plan, recognizes outstanding planning practice

At the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute (MPPI) conference in Brandon, Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg received the Manitoba Planning Excellence Award for the OurWinnipeg long-term planning framework.

Released: 1:07 a.m.

WINNIPEG - February 24, 2012 - At the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute (MPPI) conference in Brandon, Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg received the Manitoba Planning Excellence Award for the OurWinnipeg long-term planning framework.

This is the second major award the City of Winnipeg has received for OurWinnipeg in the past year. OurWinnipeg earned a national award for city planning from the Canadian Institute of Planners in July 2011.

"The OurWinnipeg plan and its grassroots, collaborative approach has received continued recognition from peers in the planning community," said Councillor Jeff Browaty, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development. "I'm very proud of this outstanding achievement and the awards it has earned."

OurWinnipeg replaced Plan Winnipeg 2020 as the official development plan which will guide land use and development in a sustainable manner in Winnipeg over the next 25 years. OurWinnipeg was developed through a groundbreaking public engagement initiative - engaging over 42,000 citizens and stakeholders to determine their vision of what Winnipeg might look like in the future.

The Manitoba Planning Excellence Awards acknowledge individuals, organizations, companies, Manitoba municipalities and planning districts in their efforts to enhance communities through innovative and high quality planning initiatives. The Awards promote outstanding planning practice deliberately guided by and supporting sustainable development principles in Manitoba communities.
