My landlord did not pay the utility bill and I have no heat, water, hydro, gas?
Report the problem to the City at 311. You will be asked to provide the following information:
- Your name, address and phone number
- Your landlord’s name and phone number
- Details about the problem you are reporting
Does the City test for radon gas, mould, asbestos or other indoor air quality issues?
The City does not test for indoor air quality issues. You need to contact an environmental testing company to undertake any air quality testing.
What are the space requirements for a suite? Except as provided in subsections 5.2 and 5.3, the following minimum space requirements apply to all dwellings. Neighbourhood Livability By-law
1. No person shall use or permit the use of a non-habitable room in a dwelling as a habitable room; and
2. All habitable rooms, bathrooms and toilet rooms shall have a ceiling height of not less than 2100 mm; and
3. All hallways, corridors and passageways must have ceiling height of not less than 2100 mm and a width of not less than 850 mm; and
4. Stairways shall have a minimum head room measured vertically from a line drawn through the outer edges of the nosings of at least 1950 mm; and
5. Each dwelling unit shall have at least 7.4 m2 of habitable floor area for each occupant thereof and the floor area shall be calculate on the bases of the total area of the habitable rooms; and
6. Each room used for sleeping purposed in a dwelling:
(i) shall have a floor area of at least 5.6 m2 for a single occupant; and
(ii) shall have at least 3.7 m2 of floor area for each occupant when two or more persons occupy the room; and
7. Where deemed necessary, the Inspector may affix to any dwelling, a card stating thereon the number of persons who may occupy such and the person responsible or person in charge shall be held responsible for the number of persons so occupying.
What are the required temperatures for heat in apartments?
Neighbourhood Livability By-law requires that the minimum temperature in an apartment be 70°F/21°C between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. and 65°F/18°C during all other hours.
Is the landlord responsible for controlling bugs, mice, and other pests in the suite I rent?
The tenant is responsible for the ordinary care of their suite, but the owner is responsible for maintaining the suite free from any insects or pests. Contact the City at 311 to register a complaint.
When are window screens required?
The landlord is required to provide properly fitted window screens from May 1st to October 31st. The tenant is responsible for any damage done to the windows screens.
