Released: July 16, 2012 at 10:06 a.m.

WINNIPEG, MB - July 16, 2012 - Tonight Councillor Scott Fielding, on behalf of Mayor Sam Katz, will present the Key to the City to Sir James Grant of Grant, Chief of Clan Grant and descendant of Cuthbert Grant.

Cuthbert Grant (1793-1854) was a fur trader, Metis leader and founding settler of the area now known as St. Francois Xavier. Winnipeggers are likely familiar with Grant Avenue and Grant’s Old Mill, both named in honour of this accomplished Metis leader.

Sir James, the current Chief of Clan Grant, is visiting Winnipeg from Scotland and took part in Cuthbert Grant Day celebrations at Grant’s Old Mill on July 14. The key purpose of his visit is to develop a connection between the Metis descendants of Cuthbert Grant and Clan Grant.

“It is an honour to present the Key to the City to Sir James Grant of Grant,” said Councillor Fielding. “Cuthbert Grant played a pivotal role in Manitoba’s history and I’m pleased the Metis descendants of the Grants, many of whom live in Winnipeg, are getting this opportunity to reconnect with Clan Grant through Sir James.”

Councillor Fielding will present the Key to the City at a banquet to honour the Rt. Hon. Sir James Grant of Grant, Lord Strathspey, at the Canad Inns Polo Park this evening.
