WINNIPEG, MB - The countdown is on to when Winnipeg joins five other Canadian cities to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015â and today, some of the city’s elite soccer youth came together at City Hall to help unveil the official host city composite logo for this exciting competition.

"I am proud the international community continues to recognize all that our province has to offer when it comes to participating in a premier sporting event like this," said Erin Selby, Minister of Advanced Education and Literacy. "The 2015 Women’s World Cup will be an inspiration for athletes across Manitoba, especially our young women and girls, who will have an unmatched opportunity to see women's soccer played at its highest level."

“We are thrilled to host this high caliber event that is expected to draw thousands of people to Winnipeg who will take part in all of the activities surrounding this competition, as well as expose our numerous young players to this incredible sport,” said Councillor Grant Nordman, on behalf of Mayor Sam Katz. “The performance by our National Women’s Team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London has fueled an even greater love for soccer and the excitement will grow as we move closer to this event.”

Earlier this year, Canada announced the six Official Host Cities for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015: from coast to coast, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal and Moncton. This competition marks the first time that a single-sport tournament has been hosted across Canada, from Vancouver near the Pacific Ocean to Moncton near the Atlantic Ocean.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup event is held every four years. Soccer is the number one participation sport in Canada and it’s anticipated that this event will help build interest and excitement around youth soccer participation.

Official Emblem and Look Design

  • The inspiration or the design comes from Canada's national motto "A Mari Usque Ad Mare", which means "From coast to coast.”
  • The unmistakable iconic maple leaf forms the basis of the Official Emblem design and in itself transports a strong sense of national pride and heritage. In a way the maple leaf may be seen to represent the country outline.
  • Three sections contain elements that are open to interpretation but present Canada as a multicultural nation, showcasing both national and urban environments - the ocean, mountains, cityscapes and flora and fauna.
  • There are eight elements which comprise the Official Look of a multifaceted Canada - Coast; Sky, Ice & Cityscape; Ambition & Mountains; Modernity & Urbanism; Pride & Honour; Water, Ocean & Inspiration; Celebration & Fans; Passion & Innovation.
  • At the heart of the maple leaf stands a figure, a victory pose. As the stem and vein of leaf, it symbolizes not only the energy of the Canadian nation in hosting this prestigious competition but also awakens a sense of hope, joy and friendship.
  • The Official Emblem is designed within the FIFA brand architecture.
