Cankerworm Bulletin #6Cankerworm Control Program continues in selected areas

Released: June 4, 2013 at 11:10 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - Today, Tuesday, June 4, 2013, weather permitting, the City of Winnipeg’s Insect Control Branch will continue its cankerworm control program.

Yesterday evening, the Insect Control Branch continued treatment in Insect Management Area 47.

Starting at 9:30 p.m. tonight, June 4, 2013, weather permitting crews will continue treatment in the Insect Management Area 47 in the following neighbourhoods: Inkster - Faraday, Luxton, St. John's and St. John's Park, and start treatment in Insect Management Area 32 in the following neighbourhoods: Earl Grey, Ebby Wentworth, Grant Park, McMillan, Rockwood and Roslyn. Spraying will not occur if there is significant rainfall or winds are greater than 20 kmph.

General Information

Treatment will be conducted using Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk), a biological product, which is sprayed from high pressure tree sprayers directly onto the foliage of the trees located in City parks and on City boulevards. This product has been approved for use in Canada by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency, and will be used in accordance with federally approved labeled directions by licensed pesticide applicators.

All buffer zones will be respected. Crews will ensure that the sprayer is not treating within 30 metres on each side of a registered property on the front street, side street, and rear lane.

Property owners not wanting insecticides applied on or adjacent to their principle residence may register as “Anti-Pesticide Registrants” for the cankerworm control programs. Those who wish to register must provide identification that ties the registrant to the address being registered for a buffer zone. A photocopy or scanned document such as a driver’s licence or a utility bill will suffice as acceptable identification proving primary residence.
