Winnipeg, MB - On behalf of the Government of Canada and the City of Winnipeg, Mayor Sam Katz today officially open a newly renovated drop-in centre area at Winnipeg’s Siloam Mission, which provides hope and comfort to those who are homeless or are at risk of being homeless.

This contribution involves $436,903 for the renovations and $693,427 for service delivery to Siloam Mission’s extended operational hours drop-in program.

“Through Budget 2014, we are building on previous actions, working with other levels of government, communities and organizations to implement a Housing First approach,” said the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State (Social Development). “In partnership with the City of Winnipeg, the Government of Canada supports Siloam Mission in its goal to help Winnipeg’s most vulnerable break free from the cycle of homelessness and poverty.”

The refurbishment to the drop-in/dining centre includes new tables and chairs, flooring, additional outer doors for temperature control and updated washroom facilities. Another aspect of the project was the creation of 200 secure storage units for those who use Siloam Mission’s services. Rather than carrying their belongings with them throughout the day, clients can now leave personal items safely and securely at the centre.

“The Homelessness Partnering Strategy is supporting important work at Siloam Mission, resulting in enhanced services and programs for clients,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “Siloam Mission offers dignity and opportunities for those affected by homelessness and this funding has allowed for important facility upgrades and new, extended hours of operation.”

“Siloam Mission would like to thank the City of Winnipeg and the Government of Canada for their support for the drop-in renovation project provided through the Homelessness Partnering Strategy “ said Floyd Perras, Siloam Mission's Executive Director. “Thanks to their contribution, as well as the support of local businesses, organizations and volunteers, renovations to the drop-in were completed during the summer of 2013. The men and women that use Siloam’s services now benefit from improved ease of access, enhanced air quality and temperature control, and a more spacious, inviting communal space.”

Since 1987, Siloam Mission has provided meals, clothing and counseling services to the chronically homeless that rely on emergency shelters. Siloam Mission assists in transitioning homeless and disadvantaged people to more self-sufficient and healthier lifestyles by providing referral services, life skill development, education upgrading and employment training opportunities.

On April 25, 2012, the City of Winnipeg entered into a funding agreement with the Government of Canada to administer the Homelessness Partnering Strategy which provides support to organizations that assist people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the city.
