Winnipeg, MB - After being closed for nine months, Margaret Grant Pool in the city’s south end has re-opened after renovations were made to create a more user friendly and accessible environment.
Mayor Sam Katz and St. Norbert Councillor Justin Swandel attended the grand re-opening of the revitalized facility today and participated in a rededication honouring the citizen the pool was named after.
“The legacy of Margaret Grant lives on in this beautiful facility that has been made more enjoyable and accessible for those who use it,” said Mayor Katz.
“Each year on average, 60,000 people use this facility to keep active, learn to swim and have fun,” said Councillor Swandel.
The interior of the building has been reconfigured and renovated in order to enhance accessibility and create a more barrier-free facility. Improvements include:
- retiled pool and pool deck
- reconfigured and renovated public change rooms
- new reception area with coat racks and slip-resistant flooring
- two new specialty change rooms with ceiling mounted lift systems
- new Portable Aqua Lift (PAL)
- accessible bi-level water fountains
- accessible front reception desk
- accessible showers in change rooms
- three public restrooms (two of which are accessible)
The facility was named after Margaret Grant in 1972. Grant, who was a long-time resident of Fort Garry, was synonymous with aquatics in Manitoba.
