Winnipeg, MB - Citizens are advised that, for public safety, the City of Winnipeg will be placing fencing and barricades around the Alexander Dock which is located at Alexander Avenue and Waterfront Drive. The purpose of this barrier is to prevent public access to the Alexander Dock from the both the riverbank and the Red River.
An engineering assessment of the underside of the wooden dock, undertaken during the winter months due to low winter river water levels, and the associated preliminary engineering reports have shown the dock to be unsafe for public use in its current condition.
The Alexander Dock is site of a memorial to Tina Fontaine. City staff have been in contact with Chief Henderson of the Sagkeeng First Nation who has acted as a liaison with Tina's home community to ensure that the memorial was respectfully relocated to an accessible and appropriate site prior to the barricade being installed.
City officials are working to assess options for the future of the dock based on the most recent engineering assessments.
