Winnipeg, MB - The Manitoba Library Association has named Winnipeg Public Library as the recipient of this year’s Manitoba Library Innovation of the Year Award for the Integration of Makerspace Philosophy in Programming and Service Delivery. The award identifies and celebrates innovation in library services in Manitoba.
“Winnipeg Public Library offers a wide range of programming opportunities for all ages. Makerspace programming allows library customers to collaborate and learn together in welcoming and accessible library spaces,” said Rick Walker, Manager, Library Services for the City of Winnipeg. “The Library’s 5-year Strategic Plan reflects the public’s view of the library as a community hub of discovery, creativity and lifelong learning - a key component of that is providing programming that is accessible, practical and hands-on.”
“The integration of makerspace philosophy in programming and service delivery has the potential to be adopted by other libraries in Manitoba and demonstrates new and innovative ideas in delivery of services and programs in the province,” said Mayu Ishida, Advocacy Director of the Manitoba Library Association. “The depth of the project is impressive. It is evident that there is a long-term commitment to evolving community needs, library spaces and dedication to staff engagement and training.”
Maker programs provide opportunities for people of all ages to create, experiment and collaborate in a self-directed, hands-on learning environment. Through these programs, the library connects the community to information and resources that foster innovation and life-long learning. Programs use both technology and DIY elements and are led by expert facilitators.
Winnipeg Public Library is currently working on plans for a dedicated Makerspace at the Millennium Library that will allow the public to participate in even more creative and collaborative programs on a daily basis.
A wide array of programming for all ages (children, teens and adults) has been developed and delivered in the past two years at Winnipeg Public Library’s branches. There have been over 100 programs delivered so far including Scratch game creation software, Arduino, Marble runs, film and sound editing, Makey Makey, sewn circuits, and programs using Magformers and Cubelets. All programs are listed in the Library’s bimonthly At The Library newsletter and on the Library’s online calendar. All programs are free, some require registration.
