Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is pleased to announce Monteyne Architecture Works as the winner of the design competition to commemorate the labour movement that resulted in the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike.
“The caliber of submissions in the design competition was inspiring,” said John Kiernan, Director of Planning, Property and Development. “We extend heartfelt congratulations to Monteyne Architecture Works on their winning design, and are pleased to acknowledge finalists H5 Architecture and Unit 7 Architecture for their innovative proposals.”
Tom Monteyne of Monteyne Architecture Works describes his firm’s winning design as a monument that honours the archetypal struggle for a fair deal that gripped the city almost 100 years ago. “Our goal with this monument is to create a unique and memorable civic space where all members of the community are welcome,” said Monteyne.
The monument will be installed at the corner of Lily Street and Market Avenue beginning this summer.
