Winnipeg names its first Food Policy Council

Winnipeg, MB - Today, Winnipeg City Council voted to appoint the members of the first Winnipeg Food Council.

“This is a great opportunity to build on existing strengths, passions and expertise related to food issues in Winnipeg,” said Brian Mayes, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, Riverbank Management and the Environment. “I look forward to working with members of the Food Council to develop our Agriculture and Food Strategy.”

The Winnipeg Food Council will include:

  • The Mayor of Winnipeg or designate;
  • One City Councillor (who can also serve as the Mayor’s designate);
  • Phaedra Miller: representative nominated by the Province of Manitoba (non-voting);
  • Lavonne Harms: health sector representative, nominated by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority
  • James Battershill: member involved with food production
  • Bruce Berry: member involved with food production
  • Kelly Janz: member involved with food businesses
  • Joyce Slater: member from research sector
  • Rob Moquin: member from community group connected to food issues
  • Mandela Madit Kuet: citizen member-at-large
  • Andi Sharma: citizen member-at-large
  • Jasmine Tara: citizen member-at-large

On February 22, 2017, Council voted unanimously to create a food council, which will serve to:

  • Advise the Mayor and Council on food system related issues;
  • Support the work of the community on food issues, enhance public health and local food security, and increase food literacy and access to food by encouraging multi-sector and strategic approaches, fostering coordination and networking, and supporting ongoing consultation; and
  • Initiate the development of and support the implementation, maintenance and evaluation of a City of Winnipeg Agricultural and Food Strategy to address municipal food security and food system issues. The City of Winnipeg Agricultural and Food Strategy will:
    • include policy directions identified through community engagement , focused research, innovative initiatives, and other actions to identify proven practices;
    • include evaluation and implementation components; and
    • be operationalized in partnership with the Winnipeg Public Service, the local food movement, businesses, community agencies, stakeholder groups, and private citizens.
