Winnipeg, MB – The North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility has won the Outstanding Recreation Facility Award through Recreation Connections Manitoba.

“The North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility is a pillar of the Dufferin neighbourhood and it’s great to see it honoured with this award,” said Councillor Mike Pagtakhan. “Designed with efficiency and accessibility in mind, this facility provides outstanding programming that contributes to the health and wellness of the community while minimizing its impact on the environment.”

The Outstanding Recreation Facility Award is awarded to a recreation facility in Manitoba that demonstrates outstanding or unique innovations in efficiency or accessibility (design, energy management, accessibility for all abilities and income levels, operations, revenue generation, or services that meet the community needs).

“Recreation Connections Manitoba would like to congratulate the North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility for receiving the Outstanding Recreational Facility Award,” said Jeff Elliott, President, Recreation Connections Manitoba. “Their dedication to providing recreational opportunities while maintaining an efficient and sustainable facility provides a model for many communities to aspire to.”

The North Centennial Recreation and Leisure Facility at 90 Sinclair Street is a hub of activity for the Point Douglas community. The facility features an indoor pool, boardroom, classroom, community use room, gymnasium, studio, and teaching kitchen. Outside of the facility, the site offers baseball diamonds, soccer pitches and will soon feature a new spray pad for summer 2018.

Renovations completed in 2010 added a 2,135 square metre addition to the facility, designed to accommodate an increased number of facility users and community groups, improve accessibility through new universal change rooms and an accessible ramp in the swimming pool, utilize sustainable and energy efficient design strategies and provide space for more innovative, responsive programming.

The complex is now home to a variety of programs and services that enhance the quality of life of its patrons and support community initiatives with a focus on building healthy minds and bodies. The facility is also LEED Silver® certified and includes green roof landscape, solar wall, substantial natural greenspace, specially engineered water systems designed to reduce water consumption, recycled material where possible and other environmental and green designs, practices and policies.
