City making progress on snowstorm clean up

Released: March 6, 2018 at 1 p.m.
Declared Snow Route Parking Ban in effect tonight midnight to 7 a.m.; Residential Parking Ban begins Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – Crews continue to make progress on improving the condition of roads and sidewalks throughout the city following yesterday's snowstorm. Back lane plowing began this morning and spot sanding and salting are also underway to improve traction.

“City-wide snow clearing is progressing well with main routes mostly complete, and bus routes and collector streets expected be finished on Wednesday,” said Cheryl Anderson, acting manager of street maintenance. “Crews are continuing to work as quickly as possible to complete this major plowing operation.”

The Declared Snow Route Parking Ban will remain in effect from midnight until 7 a.m. tonight to facilitate snow clearing. The City would like to remind motorists not to park on snow routes tonight so that plows can complete snow clearing on these important routes.

Crews are also working around-the-clock to clear sidewalks and active transportation paths and will continue this work until complete.

“In order to clear sidewalks with heavy accumulations of snow and ice, we need to use a combination of walk plows and blower attachments,” added Anderson. “This will take some time and we appreciate everyone’s patience in the coming days as we work to open up the sidewalks and pathways across the city.”

Reminder: Residential Parking Ban in effect beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m.
A Residential Parking Ban will be in effect from Wednesday at 7 p.m. until Saturday at 7 a.m. Residents are urged to confirm their snow zone letter and to move their vehicles during the 12-hour period their street is scheduled for clearing. Avoid a ticket and tow
While parking bans are in place, residents are urged to find an alternate place to park such as an off-street driveway or parking lot, or a nearby street that is not currently scheduled for plowing. This will help the plowing operation run smoothly and will prevent you from being ticketed and towed.

Vehicles parked in violation of the Declared Snow Route Parking Ban may receive a $100 ticket ($50 if paid early), and may be towed to the towing company’s compound. The Declared Snow Route Parking Ban will be in place until snow clearing is completed and the public will be notified when the ban is lifted.

Vehicles parked in violation of the Residential Parking Ban may receive a $150 ticket ($75 if paid early), and may be towed to a nearby street that is not scheduled to be plowed, or has already been cleared. If you believe your vehicle may have been towed due to the Residential Parking Ban, please contact 311 for assistance in locating it.

Think safety this winter - Stay Back, Stay Safe
Motorists are encouraged to drive to winter conditions and allow additional travel time. Approximately 400 pieces of heavy equipment will be used for this snow clearing operation so stay back and stay safe near any plowing or sanding equipment.
