Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is encouraging residents to use Emergency Preparedness Week to learn about planning ahead for emergencies. The annual event takes place during the first full week of May and encourages the public to be prepared to manage on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency, enabling first responders to focus on those in urgent need.
“While Winnipeg has amazing first responders that are ready to provide assistance in emergency situations, we need residents to plan ahead and be prepared to be independent in the event of a prolonged emergency,” said Jason Shaw, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Assistant Chief of Emergency Management. “Either purchasing or assembling an Emergency Preparedness 72 Hour Kit is one of the most important things you can do to prepare.”
An Emergency Preparedness kit contains supplies you may need during the first 72 hours of a prolonged emergency, including water, non-perishable food, a manual can opener, first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, and special needs items such as prescription medicine.
