Transit free for veterans, current serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and a companion on Remembrance Day

Winnipeg, MB – To honour the men and women who have sacrificed for our country, the City of Winnipeg will be offering free transit service on November 11 to armed forces veterans, current serving personnel, including cadets and reservists, and one companion.

"Providing free transit to veterans and current members of the Canadian armed forces is a way the city is able to recognize the tremendous commitment they have made, and continue to make, to our community and country,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I am very pleased we were able to make this recognition permanent after going through budget process. Thank you to all my Council colleagues who helped make this recognition a permanent feature of our transit service."

Those who wish to use this free service may do so by wearing a military uniform, or by presenting military identification or CF1 card at the time of boarding.

When displaying one of the above, the individual should also identify their companion to the operator.

“Lest We Forget” will be displayed as a banner message on all Winnipeg Transit buses on Monday, November 11, in rotation with regular route and destination messages.

Winnipeg Transit will also be observing a moment of silence in honour of Remembrance Day. At 11 a.m., Transit operators will pull over and stop their buses at safe locations to recognize one minute of silence.

On Monday, November 11, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.
