About the Unit

Winnipeg Police Service Canine Unit

The Winnipeg Police Service K-9 Unit consists of:

  • Six general–purpose K-9 teams (featuring Belgian Malinois dogs), which provide 24-7 support for our frontline members;
  • A specialty drug dog; and
  • Three specialty explosive detector dogs.

Training

Before seeing active duty in the community, each team must complete a 16-week in-house training program. Established in 1997, the program ensures each team meets nationally established standards set by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

In addition to training our own members, the unit also provides K-9 training to outside agencies and is responsible for the training and certification of Brandon Police K-9 Unit, Manitoba Corrections, and Milner Ridge correctional facility K-9 teams.

For further details on upcoming courses, contact our Coordinator/Trainer, P/Sgt David Bessason.
