Male Charged in Aaron Hannibal Homicide
On June 2, 2005 the Winnipeg Police Service released information regarding the homicide of 31 year-old Aaron Hannibal which occurred shortly after 6:00 p.m. that date near Talbot Avenue and Watt Street.
The Homicide Unit conducted an investigation and a 29-year-old male was arrested yesterday evening shortly after 4:00 p.m. in connection with this homicide. Daniel Benjamin Kachcan, 29 years of Winnipeg is charged with 2nd Degree Murder and was detained in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. Cause of death has been determined as a stabbing.
Marihuana Grow Operation on Mcdowell Drive
Yesterday evening shortly after 6:00 p.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service Green Team executed a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of McDowell Drive where they located a marihuana grow operation. Police seized grow equipment, 36 marihuana plants and Cannabis oil with an estimated street value of over $30,000.
A 44 year-old male was arrested and faces charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He was released on a Promise to Appear.
Update to Shots Fired Call on Empress Street
Yesterday the Winnipeg Police Service released information regarding a shots fired incident which occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. that date in the area of Empress Street and St. Matthews Avenue. Several shots had been fired in the area and police arrested a male shortly after the incident.
Police have charged a 22-year-old male in connection with the shooting. Ernesto Courchene, 22 years of Winnipeg is charged with Possess Firearm with Altered Serial Number, Careless Use of Firearm, Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm, Possession of Firearm while Prohibited, Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm. He was detained in custody.
Bike Unit Arrest During Torch Run
Yesterday shortly after 7:00 p.m. numerous law enforcement officers, civilians and children were participating in the Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run and were running near the intersection of Main Street and St. Mary Avenue. Several marked police escort vehicles were actively controlling traffic to ensure the safety of the run participants throughout the event. Uniformed members had stopped all traffic intending to go westbound on St. Mary Avenue from Main Street to allow the runners to clear the intersection.
A cyclist approached the intersection and was ordered to stop however he allegedly shouted obscenities at officers and continued though the intersection narrowly missing run participants. He then fled and was pursued by a uniform bicycle patrol member.
The cyclist allegedly ran the red light at Graham Avenue ignoring repeated instructions from pursuing police and narrowly missed hitting three pedestrians. The cyclist then almost collided with a truck and was apprehended by the bicycle patrol unit member. The cyclist began assaulting the officer however he was quickly restrained with the assistance of a civilian bystander.
John Yanuszewski, 39 years of Winnipeg is charged with Assault a Peace Officer, Disobey Traffic Control Device and as a Driver, Fail to Stop and Remain Stopped when Signalled or Requested by a Peace Officer. He was detained in custody.
