Winnipeg Police Service Media Release

Drug and Weapon Arrests

On November 15th, 2009 at approximately 4:30 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crime Unit with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team entered into a Controlled Drug and Substance Act investigation in the area of Central Winnipeg.

As a result, investigating members executed a CDSA search warrant at a residence in the 400 block of Beverley Street.

The following items were located and seized:

  • 8.5 lbs. of Cannabis Marihuana – estimated street value $24,000.00
  • $1,126.00 cash
  • 9 mm firearm
  • A quantity of ammunition

22 year old Timothy Ross KIRTON and 22 year old Kristina BALDERAS have been charged with numerous drug and weapon related offences.

They have been detained in custody.

Prostitution Enforcement

Between August and October 2009, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Vice Unit, assisted by members of Division 11 and 13 Community Support Units, conducted focused enforcement on the sex trade within the City of Winnipeg.

This endeavour has resulted in the arrest of 30 males over a period of 90 days.

These individuals have been charged with prostitution related offences, including: Stopping a Motor Vehicle for the Purpose of Engaging in Prostitution, Communicating for the Purpose of Prostitution and Juvenile Prostitution.

As a result of the investigations, 30 vehicles have been seized with the possibility of forfeiture if convictions are entered relating to the charges.

The Winnipeg Police Service recognizes the negative impact of the sex trade on our communities located in and around known areas of prostitution.

Continued enforcement will occur to curtail such activity.

Stabbing Arrest

As previously released, on November 15th, 2009 at approximately 9:45 p.m., uniform members were dispatched to a business in the 1700 block of Pembina Highway regarding a stabbing incident.

The investigation has revealed that at approximately 9:00 p.m., on the same date, a 23 year old male and a 22 year old male became involved in a conversation regarding an ongoing dispute between them. At the conclusion of the conversation, the 23 year old male attended to another nearby business in the 1700 block of Pembina Highway.

A short time later, the 22 year old male suspect in company of several other males attended to the neighbouring business and located the 23 year old male victim. It was at this time the suspect confronted the victim and stabbed him to the midsection.

The suspect fled the scene and emergency services were notified.

The victim was conveyed to hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to unstable condition.

The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit.

On November 16th, 2009, 22 year old Tuan Thanh NGUYEN of Winnipeg was arrested and charged with Attempt Murder, Assault and Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.

Serious Motor Vehicle Collision - Update

On November 16th, 2009 at approximately 12:45 p.m., emergency services were dispatched to the area of Grant Avenue and Shaftsbury Boulevard regarding a single motor vehicle collision.

The investigation has revealed that the vehicle involved was travelling westbound on Grant Avenue while being occupied by 5 youths and 1 adult.

It appears that the driver lost control, subsequently striking the centre median curb causing the vehicle to roll.

All 6 occupants were transported to hospital, treated and released.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.

Drug Arrest

On October 27th, 2009 at approximately 8:20 p.m., members of the District 2 Community Support Unit became involved in a possible break and enter investigation at a business in the 1800 block of Portage Avenue.

While investigation the matter, officers observed a quantity of illegal drugs within the premises and subsequently entered into a drug investigation.

Investigating members executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act search warrant at the business and located the following items:

  • 3 lbs. cannabis marihuana – estimated street value of $5000.00
  • 91 grams of powder cocaine - estimated street value of $7280.00
  • 778 grams cutting agent
  • $1560.00 cash
  • A variety of drug paraphernalia
  • A 43 year old male was arrested and is facing the following offences: Possess Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possess Cannabis Marihuana for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possess Proceeds of Crime, and Production Cocaine.

    He was released on a Promise to Appear.
