Dragonfly Sampling

For the past three years sampling for Odonata has been taking place in a number of Winnipeg's creeks and streams. The order Odonata includes both dragonflies and damselflies. Dragonflies are well known for eating large amounts of mosquitoes and their presence is seen as a very beneficial thing.

Sampling was conducted by dip netting in the stream at different times throughout the year.

The Odonata larva, also known as nymphs were then identified to determine which species were present in the creek or stream.

Lists of these species can be obtained for each creek sampled by selecting the appropriate creek on the map. More information and data related to this sampling can be obtained by contacting the Naturalist Services Branch.
