Bicycle Facility Type Definitions

Protected Bicycle Lanes
Protected bicycle lanes are located within the road right-of-way, but are physically separated from motor vehicle travel lanes by concrete curbs, planters, etc. Protected bicycle lanes are a hybrid type bicycle facility combining the experience of an off-street path with the convenience of on-street infrastructure of a conventional bicycle lane. These lanes can be further separated from traffic by a parking lane. Example: Assiniboine Avenue
Buffered Bicycle Lanes
Buffered bicycle lanes provide more protected space for cycling than a painted bicycle lane, typically through a painted buffer or ‘shy’ zones on one or both sides of cyclists. Plastic posts can be used to delineate the lanes. These lanes can be further separated from traffic by a parking lane. Example: Pembina Highway
Neighbourhood Greenways
Neighbourhood greenways are routes on streets with low vehicle speeds and volumes, which include a range of treatments to slow down traffic and improve safety for walking, biking and driving. Treatments range from signage, bike signals and pavement markings to varying degrees of traffic calming (speed humps, traffic diverters, traffic circles, etc.). Example: Nassau Street
Painted Bicycle Lanes
Painted bicycle lanes are separate lanes that are designated exclusively for bicycle travel and include pavement markings. Examples: St. Mary Avenue, Harrow Street
Off-Street Pathways
Off-street pathways are physically separated from motor vehicles and provide sufficient width and supporting facilities to be used for cycling and walking. These pathways can be paved with concrete, asphalt or may be surfaced with stone dust, fine limestone, or gravel screenings. Examples: Northeast Pioneer Greenway, Transcona Trail, Harte Trail
Shared Use Lanes
Shared use lanes provide direct routes for experienced cyclists along the outer travel lane of a roadway. While cyclists mix with motor vehicle traffic, they are separate from pedestrians using the sidewalk. Sharrows painted on the road surface remind drivers they must share the road with cyclists. Example: Regent Avenue
Adjustable Protected Bike Lanes
Adjustable protected bike lanes are physically separated from lanes of traffic and pedestrian infrastructure using a variety of options. The layout and installation can be easily modified based on actual performance and on-going public engagement. The implementation can be done reasonably quickly and is cost-effective. No example currently exists, but is currently being studied as part of the West Alexander to East Exchange Corridor project.
Bus/Bike Diamond Lanes
Bus/bike diamond lanes are reserved for busses and bicycles, and provide direct routes for experienced cyclists along the outer lane of a roadway. The intent of diamond lanes is to create a means of increasing both the speed and reliability of transit service while providing a safe lane for cyclists to ride. Most Diamond Lanes have restricted designated hours. Example: Portage Avenue
