Bulky waste disposal
Do not put out bulky waste for regular garbage collection. Contact 311 to arrange for a special pick up.
You can have up to six bulky waste items picked up for each request. A $20.00 fee may apply.
-
To request a bulky waste pickup, contact 311 at least two full business days (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday) prior to your requested pick up date that coincides with your next scheduled garbage collection day. (e.g., Call by Tuesday to schedule a Friday pickup. Calling on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday is too late to arrange a Monday pickup.)
Bulky waste is garbage heavier than 34 kilograms (75 pounds) or longer than 1.5 metres (5 feet) in any direction. Examples of bulky waste are:
- household furniture
- mattresses
- box springs
- large appliances (stoves, dishwashers, clothes washing machines and dryers, etc.)
Ozone-depleting substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs - also known by the trade name Freon) are hazardous materials. Older fridges, freezers and air conditioners all contain these substances and these appliances will not be picked up with regular garbage collection. They are picked up on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday depending on the area of the City you live in.
To request a special pick up service that includes professional removal of the hazardous materials, contact 311 at least two full business days (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday) prior to your requested pick up date that coincides with your next scheduled collection day. (e.g., Call by Monday to schedule a Thursday pickup. Calling on Friday, Saturday or Sunday is too late to arrange a Tuesday pickup.) A $20.00 per item charge will apply.
You may also take appliances containing ozone-depleting substances directly to Brady Road Landfill where the hazardous materials will be professionally removed.
-
To cancel a bulky waste or ozone-depleting substance pickup, you must contact 311 two full business days (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday) prior to the scheduled pickup or the fee will still be charged. (e.g., Call by Monday to cancel a Thursday pickup. Calling on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday to cancel a Monday pickup is too late.)
If you have a scheduled pickup and you do not cancel or leave the items out for pickup, the fee will still be charged.
Large electronic items, such as televisions, stereos, computers, printers, fax machines or microwaves, can contain hazardous materials and will not be picked up with either bulky waste or regular garbage collection. If the item still works, consider donating it to a person or group that can use it. Green Manitoba
has a list of companies and groups that re-use or recycle waste computer equipment and electronics. These organizations either refurbish items, where possible, and then donate or resell them, or else they recycle the electronic components and safely dispose of the heavy metals. The only parts sent to the landfill are plastic components that cannot yet be recycled. Many of these groups only accept computer equipment and electronics from residential sources.Take household construction / renovation materials to the Brady Road Landfill for disposal. Examples are:
