How to recycle your real Christmas tree

Let's Chip In depots open until Jan. 31

January 4, 2019

How to recycle your real Christmas tree

If you've opted to have a real Christmas tree and are wondering what to do with it now that the holidays are winding down, consider recycling it at one of the City’s Let's Chip In depots.

Trees are being collected until January 31 at 11 locations around Winnipeg. Hours of the sites vary and in some cases are open 24 hours.

Make sure to remove all decorations and tinsel and take it out of its stand. The tree must also not be in a bag.

The trees are then turned into wood chip mulch available for pick up from the temporary depots starting in early January. The mulch is free but you have to bring your own container. Mulch is not available at the 4R Winnipeg Depots.

Once the temporary depots close on January 31, Christmas trees will continue to be collected year-round at the three 4R Winnipeg Depots.

Over the past 25 years, the City has recycled 380,000 Christmas trees. That works out to be more than 1,750 tonnes of material diverted from the landfill.
