Salting of Priority 1 streets and truck plowing of Priority 2 streets beginning this morning

Motorists are urged to use extra caution and to drive to winter conditions

Released: 10:30 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – In response to yesterday’s snowfall, City crews will begin salting Priority 1 streets this morning followed by a truck plow later today. A truck plow with loaders on Priority 2 streets will begin this morning. Plowing on Priority 1 sidewalks and active transportation pathways will start tonight at 7:00 p.m.

There are no winter parking bans currently in effect.

“We are salting the Priority 1 routes in advance of plowing to help melt some of the accumulation from yesterday’s snow fall,” said Cheryl Anderson, Acting Manager, Streets Maintenance. “Warmer temperatures today will allow the salt to soften portions of the snowfall that have hardened and assist truck plows in effectively clearing the roadways later today.”

Anti-icing and sanding activities on bridges and underpasses started yesterday afternoon, and crews worked overnight to improve traction and roadway conditions.

Drivers are advised to:

  • factor in additional travel time to get to destinations
  • slow down to a safe travel speed for winter conditions
  • allow appropriate stopping distances
  • stay back and stay safe from heavy equipment that is working
