Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on McKenzie Street

Released: 8:36 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 12:29 a.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2022 the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a vacant bungalow in the 0 to 100 block of McKenzie Street.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke coming from the structure. An offensive attack was launched, and the fire was declared under control at 12:52 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

An earlier reference to a fire at this location in May 2021 was inaccurate. WFPS has not recently responded to a fire at this address.

City of Winnipeg closures, cancellations & service impacts – Update #3

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg will be reopening our facilities and resuming services that were previously closed, cancelled, or suspended due to the storm in the days ahead.

Residents are reminded that all civic offices are closed on Friday, April 15 and on Monday, April 18, and that holiday operating hours and schedules are in effect this weekend.

The following is an updated comprehensive list of service impacts:

311 Customer Service counters

The Customer Service front-counter located at the Susan A. Thompson Building, 510 Main St., as well as the Bilingual Customer Service Centre, located at 170 Goulet St., will re-open to in-person service on Tuesday, April 19.

Residents can continue to contact 311 through phone, email, and on social media.

Animal Services

Animal Services, located at 1057 Logan Ave., will resume in-person service on Saturday, April 16. 

Brady Road Landfill & 4R Winnipeg Depots

The Brady Road Resource Management Facility and Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot will reopen on Friday, April 15.

The Pacific 4R Winnipeg Depot and Panet 4R Winnipeg Depot will reopen on Saturday, April 16.

Committee meetings

Public meetings scheduled for Thursday, April 14 have been rescheduled. Meetings are set to resume on Tuesday, April 19. For more information, consult the schedule of meetings.

Community Services Department Customer Service counter

The Community Services Department’s front-counter, located at 395 Main St., will reopen to in-person service on Tuesday, April 19.

Indoor pools, Fitness & Leisure Centres, and arenas

All City indoor pools, fitness and leisure centres, and arenas will remain closed and all City-run recreation programming cancelled on Thursday, April 14. Impacted customers will automatically be refunded a credit on their account, as per Facility Terms and Conditions and Activity Terms and Conditions.

Select facilities will reopen, and select programming will resume, on Friday, April 15. Consult our holiday operating hours and schedules for more information.

Libraries

Libraries will reopen on Saturday, April 16. Online services, including downloadable eBooks, catalogue searching, and holds/renewals, are available anytime at City of Winnipeg – Winnipeg Public Libraries.

Due dates and holds pick-up dates have been extended to Thursday, April 21.

Municipal cemeteries

All City cemeteries will reopen on Friday, April 15.

Recycling & garbage collection

Recycling and garbage collection days have been adjusted to reflect the recent service suspension.

  • Residents whose collection day was Wednesday are advised to put their carts out on Friday, April 15
  • Residents whose collection day was Thursday are advised to put their carts out on Saturday, April 16
  • Residents whose collection day was Friday are advised to put their carts out on Sunday, April 17

Residents are advised to not put carts out ahead of their collection day to ensure snow clearing equipment can more effectively clear laneways. Residents are also advised to ensure their carts are free of ice and snow, and accessible to collection trucks.

Zoning & Permits – Planning, Property & Development Department

The Zoning & Permits branch will reopen on Tuesday, April 19. Residents are reminded that permit applications must be submitted digitally.

Winnipeg Transit

Winnipeg Transit is currently experiencing minor service delays as a result of the storm.

Passengers are advised to check updated schedules on Navigo prior to travelling and are advised not all regularly scheduled buses may run.

Any significant Winnipeg Transit service impacts will be communicated via the @winnipegtransit Twitter account, and information about any potential detours will be posted to the Winnipeg Transit Service Advisories page and the @transitalerts Twitter account. We strongly advise against non-essential travel.

Snow clearing & ice control operations

A major, city-wide snow clearing operation consisting of approximately 200 pieces of equipment is in progress.

Crews are clearing streets, sidewalks, active transportation paths, and back lanes based on the priority system, beginning with Priority 1 (P1); regional streets, major routes, priority active transportation routes and adjacent sidewalks and active transportation paths; followed by Priority 2 (P2); bus routes, collector streets and adjacent sidewalks and active transportation paths.

Back lane clearing will be prioritized to help facilitate garbage and recycling collection.  

An Extended Snow Route Parking Ban is still in effect, prohibiting parking on snow routes between midnight and 7 a.m. For more information, see: City of Winnipeg – Snow Clearing & Ice Control.

Residents are reminded to drive to conditions and to stay back from heavy equipment.
