What to expect when you come to the Archives

The City of Winnipeg Archives is closed to the public until further notice. Staff will continue to offer reference services by telephone and email. To discuss your research needs, please contact the Archives at 204-986-5325 or email . To search and access records online, visit Winnipeg in Focus.

Rules and Regulations

When you visit the Archives, you must follow the Archives' rules and regulations.

  • Application for Research
    On your first visit each year, you will be asked to complete an application for research. The application form is kept on file for one year.
  • Sign the Register
    You will be asked to sign in and out each time you visit the Archives.
  • Preservation
    The Archives is responsible for preserving the City's archival records. To ensure that consultation, handling, use and copying of archival materials does not cause damage and to address safety concerns, the following rules apply:
    • No food or drink is permitted in the Archives' Research Room.
    • Pencils only are permitted for taking notes.
    • Documents must be handled with care.
    • Backpacks and large bags are kept in lockers onsite.
  • Copyright
    Researchers are responsible for observing Canadian copyright law and for properly acknowledging extracts from documents.
  • Citation
    Documents from the City of Winnipeg Archives should be cited as follows:
    • City of Winnipeg Archives
      Title, Area/Aisle/Box/File and/or Page Reference
  • Access
    Some archival records may be subject to access restrictions...
