Successful Library Amnesty recovers approximately 3,200 overdue items

With more than 3,200 overdue items returned, the recent Library Amnesty program is being considered a success by the Winnipeg Public Library.

WINNIPEG - March 30, 2012 - With more than 3,200 overdue items returned, the recent Library Amnesty program is being considered a success by the Winnipeg Public Library.

The amnesty was held from March 12 to 25, 2012. This two-week amnesty was an opportunity for library members to return any overdue Library items without paying the accompanying overdue fines and to regain borrowing privileges that may have been suspended.

Highlights of the recent Library Amnesty include:

  • An estimated 3,000 items that were less than a year overdue, were returned because of the Amnesty. These items have an approximate value $75,000.
  • An estimated 200 items were returned that were more than a year overdue.
  • 680 library accounts were reactivated and renewed during the Amnesty compared to the same period in 2011, a 34% increase.
