WINNIPEG - Starting today, 335,000 new garbage and recycling carts will be delivered to homes as part of Winnipeg's new garbage and recycling services. By the end of September, every single-family dwelling will have one 240-litre garbage cart and one 240-litre recycling cart.
Delivery will begin with recycling carts for residents in the northwest area that already have automated garbage cart collection service. Delivery crews will be working from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The new carts will be delivered to the property line on the front street. Residents are encouraged to:
- bring their carts up to their home as soon as possible after delivery and store them in a safe place (e.g., garage, at the side of the house, just inside a fence),
- record the serial number of each cart and keep it on hand to help identify the cart if there is ever a problem.
The new garbage, recycling and yard waste collection service for single-family homes will begin the first week of August for residents currently served by large shared garbage bins and wheelbarrow carts, and the first week of October for all other Winnipeg residents.
Inside one of the new carts, residents will find:
- a user guide outlining the new collection services,
- a calendar with their new collection dates, from their first collection date (either August or October) until the end of 2013,
- two compostable paper bags as a sample of the type of paper bag accepted for the yard waste collection program, and
- a reusable shopping bag.
Taped to the outside of the cart will be a notice reminding residents not to use their cart until their first collection date (either August or October).
Residents can find out which month their cart will be delivered by:
- visiting the website at winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste
- phoning 311
- downloading Winnipeg's My Waste app if they have a smartphone or tablet at winnipeg.ca/mywaste
Winnipeg's new garbage and recycling services, part of a waste minimization plan approved by City Council in October 2011, are designed to significantly boost Winnipeg's low diversion rate by providing uniform and equitable garbage collection service for residents, together with more opportunities to reduce and recycle. With a current diversion rate of only 15% (one of the lowest in Canada), it is expected that Winnipeggers could significantly reduce the amount of material that goes to our landfill by more than 50%.
