Winnipeg, MB - Watching and participating in ice sports and other events at the Glenwood Community Centre Arena will soon be more comfortable and warm during the cold winter months, thanks to Phase Two of the Building Communities Initiative II (BCI II) funding agreement between the Manitoba government and City of Winnipeg, Education Minister Nancy Allan, on behalf of Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux, and Councillor Brian Mayes, on behalf of Mayor Sam Katz, announced today.
“Upgrading the Glenwood facility benefits the whole neighbourhood and the improvements will enhance the recreation options for families and local residents of all ages,” said Lemieux. “The province is pleased to continue its support for these important infrastructure projects that help re-energize communities.”
“During hockey season, arenas can feel like second homes to players and their families,” said Mayor Katz. “The upgrades planned at the Glenwood Community Centre Arena will make this facility more enjoyable for the people who spend time at the rink. The City is proud of our partnership with the Province on this initiative to fund upgrades and improvements to these well-used community spaces.”
Phase Two of BCI II is providing $280,000 in funds (cost-shared equally by the city and province at $140,000 each) for upgrades to the existing Glenwood Community Centre Arena including:
- sandblast and repair beams
- new insulation and cladding
- interior wall repairs and painting
- new heating and dehumidification system
The total estimated project cost is $523,000. Funding for the project was also provided through the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund ($103,226) and a loan secured by the Glenwood Community Centre ($140,000).
“The Glenwood Moffat Arena has served the community for almost 40 years,” said Peter Elwick, President, Glenwood Community Centre. “Volunteers have put in thousands of hours to provide a place where the community can meet. The funding of upgrades to the arena will guarantee another 40 years of faithful service.”
The project is expected to be completed by late summer 2013.
The BCI II partnership is a multi-year, cost-shared capital initiative developed jointly by the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg. The goal of BCI II is to support community revitalization through improvements to local community infrastructure in targeted older neighbourhoods and contribute to the vitality, safety and health of communities throughout the city. The projects supported through BCI II increase community confidence and attract, support and help retain local residents and businesses.
Previous projects include improving athletic fields, playgrounds and structures, splash pads, lighting, seating, pathways in parks, upgrades and expansion of community centres. Projects are selected in consultation with key stakeholders and community groups.
