Winnipeg, MB - Yesterday, Animal Services Officers, assisted by members of the Winnipeg Police Service, acted on a tip regarding a possible American Alligator being housed in Winnipeg.
A two-foot alligator (photos) was located in a St. Vital home and was surrendered to Animal Services by its owner. Alligators are illegal in Winnipeg under the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law.
The American Alligator can grow upwards of 15 feet and weigh up to 1,000 pounds in adulthood. The natural habitat for American Alligators includes areas of the southern United States such as Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.
The Animal Services Agency is working to find a home for the alligator at an accredited zoo.
