Winnipeg, MB - In response to recent and forecasted snowfall, a grader plowing operation will begin tonight at 7:00 p.m. on main routes, bus routes and collector streets to improve roadway conditions. To facilitate snow clearing on major routes, a Declared Snow Route Parking Ban will be in effect starting tonight at midnight (Wednesday, February 11 at 12:00 a.m.).
The Declared Snow Route Parking Ban extends the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban by two hours, prohibiting parking on any designated snow route between midnight and 7:00 a.m.
The following plowing and sanding operations will take place beginning today:
- Priority 1 streets (regional) â�" Grader plow operations will commence at 7:00 p.m. this evening and will continue through to completion, and salting operations will continue throughout the day today.
- Priority 2 street (collector/bus routes) â�" Maintenance sanding will take place at priority locations. Grader plowing operations will begin on this network when Priority 1 operations are complete.
- Priority 3 streets (residential) â�" Crews will be sanding P3 streets where required. Upon completion of the P1 and P2 network operation, a Residential Parking Ban will be called later this week. Dates and times will be announced tomorrow.
- Priority 1, 2 and 3 sidewalks â�" A full sidewalk plowing operation of the P1, P2 and P3 sidewalk network will begin this evening at 7:00 p.m.
- Back lanes â�" Lane clearing will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, February 11 at 7:00 a.m.
The cost of a full city-wide snow clearing operation, including a residential street snow clearing operation, is approximately $6 million - $8 million.
Avoid a ticket and tow
Vehicles parked in violation of the Declared Snow Route Parking Ban will receive a $100 ticket ($50 if paid early), and may be towed to the towing company’s compound. The Declared Snow Route Parking Ban will be in place until snow clearing is completed and the public will be notified when the ban is lifted. At such time, the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban will continue to be in effect from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Approximately 400 - 450 pieces of heavy equipment will be used for this snow clearing operation so motorists are reminded to drive to road conditions and to use extreme caution when driving near any snow clearing equipment or sanding trucks.
