Busy schools, busy streets: reminder to observe signage and traffic regulations around schools

Released: September 9, 2015 at 8:59 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - Pedestrian and vehicular traffic on residential streets near schools will get busier as school gets back in session. Awareness and compliance with signage and traffic regulations are important in ensuring the safety of children being picked up and dropped off, as well as parents, all motorists and pedestrians.

Motorists are encouraged to comply with parking signage and requirements around school zones. Vehicles that are illegally parked and/or stopped for school pick-ups and drop-offs can cause hazards by:

  • Reducing the line of sight on the road, making it difficult for motorists, parents and children to see oncoming traffic;
  • Causing obstructions and delays to regular traffic flow; and
  • Preventing or impeding access to the area for emergency vehicles, Winnipeg Transit buses and school buses.

Some No Stop signs are placed in areas specifically where Winnipeg Transit buses and school buses are required to turn. Parking in these No Stop areas greatly reduces the turn radius for large buses and reduces visibility for motorists and pedestrians.
