Annual Snow Route Parking Ban begins Thursday, December 1

Winnipeg, MB - The City's Annual Snow Route Parking Ban will take effect at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2016. Vehicles may not park on streets designated as snow routes between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.

The Annual Snow Route Parking Ban is in effect from December 1 to March 1.

Avoid a ticket and tow

Snow routes are clearly marked with signs like these:

Citizens are encouraged to check their streets for snow route signs, or if unsure, to call 311 or use the online Address Lookup Tool.

Snow routes are a top priority for snow clearing to ensure that emergency vehicles can navigate quickly and safely around the city. It’s important that vehicles are not parked on snow routes overnight in order to enable rapid and efficient snow clearing of these critical routes.

Vehicles parked in violation of the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban can receive a $100 ticket ($50 if paid early), and may be towed to the towing company’s compound.

Five winter parking bans
Other than the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban starting December 1, no other parking bans are in place at this time. The City of Winnipeg has five different winter parking bans:

  1. Annual Snow Route Parking Ban - Parking is prohibited on snow routes between 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. from December 1 to March 1.
  2. Declared Snow Route Parking Ban - When additional overnight plowing is required on snow routes after a snowfall, a Declared Snow Route Parking Ban is placed into effect. This ban extends the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban by two hours, so when it is declared, vehicles are prohibited from parking on snow routes from midnight to 7:00 a.m.
  3. Residential Parking Ban (Know Your Zone!) - A residential parking ban is called to facilitate the City’s snow clearing response to an extreme snowfall. All residential streets are assigned a snow zone; each snow zone is identified by a letter of the alphabet. Zones are plowed in 12-hour shifts, around-the-clock to enable timely and effective clearing of snow and ice from residential streets. Parking is prohibited on residential streets during the 12-hour period when a zone is scheduled for clearing.
  4. Snow Emergency - The Mayor may declare a Snow Emergency at any time which will prompt a Snow Emergency Parking Ban prohibiting parking on snow routes.
  5. Temporary No Parking - Occasionally, individual streets may require additional snow removal work. Temporary "No Parking" signs are posted when streets require snow removal.
