Winnipeg, MB – At approximately 10:30 a.m. on January 19, 2019, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of an electrical issue in the utility area of a two-storey, multi-family complex in the 800 block of London Street. Once on scene, crews investigated and identified a problem at the main electrical panel. The power was turned off and Manitoba Hydro was called to attend.
While crews awaited Hydro’s arrival, smoke and flames broke out inside a unit. A working fire was declared and crews immediately launched an interior, offensive attack. Crews were able to contain the fire to the two end suites in the building. The suites have heavy fire damage and are unsafe to enter. Additional suites suffered extensive water damage. Crews will remain on scene into the evening undertaking significant overhaul to ensure all hot spots are extinguished.
All residents of the complex were safely evacuated. No injuries were reported. At this time, WFPS has no timeline on when residents of the undamaged suites will be able to return to their homes. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team will be working to provide resources to all displaced residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time. Manitoba Hydro crews also remain on scene.
Traffic in the area will remain impacted until crews complete their work on scene.
