Winnipeg, MB – At 9:51 p.m. on January 24, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic alarm at a 14-storey high-rise in the first block of Chesterfield Avenue. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene, due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a high-rise structure.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from a single suite on the third floor. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 10:13 p.m. Damage was contained to a single suite.
While many residents self-evacuated, firefighters did assist several to safety. One individual was assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Winnipeg Transit provided buses to shelter the residents while firefighters completed ventilation of the building. Once the smoke was cleared from the building, residents were able to return to their suites.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. There are no damage updates available at this time.
