Released: June 17, 2020 at 5:22 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB –At 3:31 p.m. on June 17, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey, apartment block in the 300 block of Poplar Avenue. When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke coming from the building. An offensive attack was launched with the Incident Commander declaring the fire under control at 4:00 p.m. Crews then worked to ventilate smoke from the building. The fire was contained to the suite of origin.

Most occupants of the building self-evacuated prior to the arrival of WFPS. All those remaining were assisted to safety by crews. One individual was assessed on scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

Three cats were located and brought to safety. Winnipeg Animal Services attended the scene to provide care for the animals.

All occupants of the complex, with the exception of those living in the suite where the fire originated, were able to return to the suites once crews completed their work on scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
