Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service invites residents to participate in Fire Prevention Week, October 3 to 9

Residents encouraged to Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) invites all residents to mark Fire Prevention Week, October 3 to 9, by familiarizing themselves with the sounds of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and fire alarm bells at home, school, and at work. This year’s theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Seconds count in an emergency, so it’s important to know how to respond to a particular sound.

“Smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and fire alarm bells save lives. But residents need to know what sounds to listen for, and what to do when they hear it.” said Christian Schmidt, Chief of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “We remind residents to review these sounds, and to make sure they are maintaining their alarms properly so that when an emergency arises, they can act quickly to protect themselves and their families.”

Qualifying residents can apply for a WFPS member to install a free smoke alarm via the SAFE family program.

Community events

This week, WFPS has teamed up with Canadian Tire to promote the importance of smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and other fire and life safety equipment by hosting booths inside a number of Canadian Tire stores in the city. Members of the public can talk with WFPS representatives about these important devices, how to test and them, and where to install them in a residence at the following locations from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.:

Fire drills for schools

On Wednesday, October 6, schools across Winnipeg will take part in fire drills, promoting fire safety and providing tips on fire prevention to students.

Fire Paramedic Station open houses

On Saturday, October 9, from noon to 4 p.m., Winnipeggers and their families are invited to attend open houses at a number of fire paramedic stations. All events will be held outdoors, and masks, physical distancing, and hand sanitizers will be used to help keep everyone safe.

The following stations will be hosting the open houses:

  • Station 5, 845 Sargent Ave.
  • Station 7, 10 Allan Blye Dr.
  • Station 13, 799 Lilac St.
  • Station 16, 1001 McGregor St.
  • Station 18, 5000 Roblin Blvd.
  • Station 20, 525 Banting Dr.
  • Station 23, 880 Dalhousie Dr.
  • Station 24, 1665 Rothesay St.
  • Station 25, 701 Day St.
  • Station 27, 27 Sage Creek Blvd.

In the event of inclement weather, the open houses will be held on Saturday, October 16, from noon to 4 p.m.
