Winnipeg, MB – At 3:53 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half storey, side-by-side duplex in the 500 block of Redwood Avenue.
When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the building. They launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 4:24 p.m.
All occupants of the duplex self-evacuated prior to crew arrival.
One resident was treated on-scene by paramedics and taken to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
Due to a functioning smoke alarm, the resident was alerted to the fire and quickly exited the building. Residents are reminded of the following fire safety measures:
- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement.
- Test your smoke alarm once a month by pressing the test button. It should emit an alarm.
- Change smoke alarm batteries once a year or as per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years, regardless of whether is still working.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
