Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Sherburn Street and Alfred Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two house fires overnight.

Sherburn Street Fire

At 9:10 p.m. on November 19, 2021, the WFPS responded to a report of a fire in a two-and-a-half-storey, single-family home in the 500 block of Sherburn Street.

When crews arrived, they encountered smoke and flames coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 9:43 p.m.

Occupants of the home safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. Crews located a pet rabbit in the house and brought it to safety, reuniting it with its owners.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services was called to assist displaced residents in finding temporary alternative accommodations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Alfred Street Fire

At 1:56 a.m. on November 20, 2021, on-duty Winnipeg Police Service officers reported a fire in a vacant, one-and-a-half-storey house in the 400 block of Alfred Avenue.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke coming from the house and launched an offensive attack. Hovering above the scene and using thermal imaging technology, the Winnipeg Police Service’s AIR1 helicopter assisted the WFPS Incident Commander by providing valuable information. The fire was declared under control at 2:26 a.m.

A search of the building was completed and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
