Released: January 3, 2022 at 3:02 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:49 a.m. on Monday, January 3, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a monitored fire alarm in a five-storey commercial and office building in the 700 block of Portage Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene they encountered heavy smoke coming from the building. Due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a large structure, a second alarm was called which increased the number of apparatus on scene. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 11:44 a.m.

Occupants of the building safely self-evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time. The building suffered significant smoke, fire, and water damage.
