City Libraries kick-off TD Summer Reading Club

Released: June 14, 2022 at 10:41 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – TD Summer Reading Club, Canada’s largest bilingual summer reading program, returns for another year of reading fun and programs at Winnipeg Public Library. Children of all ages can now visit any library branch to receive a free bilingual reading kit that includes an activity notebook, stickers, and a calendar to track reading.

“Frequent reading is a pathway to higher learning and the TD Summer Reading Club is a fun way to get children engaged and improving their literacy skills,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “With over 2000 public libraries participating across the country, the Club is helping build literacy for the next generation of Canadian children.”

Participants can explore recommended reads, track their reading, and participate in activities online. Submit your progress at any Winnipeg Public Library branch for a chance to win great prizes, including books, swim passes, or tickets to a Winnipeg Goldeyes game.

“There’s no better way to discover new ideas, learn new skills, or be transported to a new world than to pick up a good book,” said Sherri Rollins, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “We can’t wait to welcome young readers of all ages to the Winnipeg Public Library for a summer of reading and fun.”

Pre-readers can also join the club by being read to by their parents, siblings, or caregivers. Reading aloud to children supports early literacy skill development and improves school readiness.

The Teen Summer Challenge Card also returns for youth in Grades 7 – 12. For each challenge teens complete, they’ll receive a ballot from library staff to enter a prize draw. Pick up a bilingual challenge card at any branch, or download it at Winnipeg Public Library – Booked

Check out the online calendar or view the What’s On at Winnipeg Public Library brochure for information on all programs, including special performances and story times. All programs are free, and require registration.

TD Summer Reading Club runs until Friday, September 2.
