Winnipeg, MB – At 10:19 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to multiple reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 200 block of College Avenue.
When crews arrived on-scene, they found smoke coming from a floor of the building. They launched an offensive attack, containing the fire to one suite and working to ventilate the building. The fire was declared under control at 11:11 a.m..
A search of the fire suite was conducted but no occupants were found. Residents of other suites self-evacuated prior to crew arrival or sheltered-in-place if fire crews determined it was safe to do so. No injuries were reported.
Fire crews located two cats on-scene that had succumbed to fire-related injuries and could not be saved.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services was called to assist three residents in finding temporary accommodations.
College Avenue was closed in both directions between Main Street and Charles Street to facilitate fire operations, as well as two southbound lanes of Main Street. Roads have since reopened.
Fire damage was contained to the suite of origin, with heavy smoke damage throughout the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
