Our Office of Public Engagement team won a communicator of the year award from the Canadian Public Relations Society’s (CPRS) Manitoba Chapter for an outstanding contribution to engagement.
The CPRS awards showcase some of the most prestigious public relations and communications work in Manitoba. It celebrates innovation, resourcefulness, and creativity.
The team was recognized for its work on the Lord Roberts Community Traffic Study.
The project fully integrated community feedback into municipal decision-making. It was a first-of-its-kind traffic study that began in 2018 and concluded in 2023.
The team’s work helped to identify community traffic concerns, validate those concerns with real data, and develop community-driven solutions to improve transportation in the area.
Thanks in part to the unique program developed by our Office of Public Engagement (OPE), the Lord Roberts study led to a city-wide policy for community traffic calming processes.
“I’m delighted OPE is being recognized in this way. The team worked hard to consider community members' diverse needs and interests and reflect them in our solutions," said project manager Rebecca Peterniak, the City’s Road Safety Management Engineer.
As part of the project, we conducted surveys, held workshops, and door knocked on every street in the neighbourhood. They also assembled and engaged with a Public Advisory Committee (PAC).
“OPE worked to ensure committee members felt respected and heard,” said Peterniak. “The team also made sure community members felt empowered to share their experiences.”
