Canine & memorial funds

Canine Fund

The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) Canine Fund is used solely for two purposes both of which relate to Winnipeg Police Service property or operations.

The Canine Fund is used for the purpose of caring for retired WPS canines which remain the property of the Winnipeg Police Service but are in retirement and are the subject of a caregiver contract with the WPS. Proceeds from the Fund for this purpose are used to pay for canine food costs, veterinary and dental bills, equipment to assist with pain or mobility such as harnesses or small ramps, funeral and burial costs, or other, similar costs related to the purpose of caring for retired WPS canines.

The Canine Fund is used for the purpose of enhancing protection and performance for actively serving WPS canines. Proceeds from the Fund for this purpose are used to pay for protective body armour, as well as specialized training and equipment such as cameras, or other, similar costs related to the purpose of enhancing protection and performance for actively serving canines.

The City of Winnipeg is a qualified donee and will issue official donation receipts for gifts in the amount of $25 and higher.

Canine Memorial Fund

The Winnipeg Police Canine Memorial will be a permanent structure to honour the beloved and devoted working dogs for the Winnipeg Police Service and the citizens of Winnipeg.

Construction of the memorial, to be located on the grounds of the Winnipeg Police Canine Unit Building, is set to begin later this year. A fundraising campaign is under way, and we are inviting the public to be part of this legacy project by making a donation to this effort.

Your donation will be recognized on a memory stone inscribed with the message of your choice and installed as part of the entrance sidewalk leading up to the memorial.

Celebrate the memory of a loved one, a pet, honor someone special in your life or mark a special occasion with your memory stone at the Winnipeg Police Canine Memorial site.

Statement of Purpose for the Canine Memorial Fund

Donations to the Canine Memorial Fund will be used solely for the purposes of planning, construction and maintenance of the Canine Memorial Site which will be located in front of the Canine Facility at 77 Durand Road, adjacent to the East District Police Station.  The Memorial Site will be home to a life size bronze sculpture of a police dog standing guard in front of a columbarium wall containing the cinerary urns of canines who provided active service to the WPS.  The Memorial Site will be open to members of the public who wish to pay their respects.
