Hit & Run — Arrest: C19-72082

On April 6, 2019, at approximately 2:20 a.m., emergency services personnel responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the 300 block of Marion Street.   

A 36-year old male was transported to hospital in stable condition. He advised he was closing up a beverage room where he was employed and while in the parking lot, he heard squealing tires and saw a vehicle drive directly towards him. He jumped up but was struck in the lower body, causing him to land on the vehicle's hood and windshield. The vehicle fled, and the driver failed to remain the scene.

On April 7, 2019, officers located the suspect,  a 25-year-old male. He was arrested for Assault with a Weapon, Drive Carelessly, Drive Suspended/While Disqualified and Drivers Fail to Exchange Particulars. He has been released on a Promise to Appear.

Firearms — Arrest: C19-72437

On April 6, 2019, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Winnipeg Police were called to the Windsor Hotel regarding a firearm discharged inside this location. Central District and Tactical Support officers responded and located damage consistent with a firearm discharge.

As a result, the area was closed off, and police began evacuating the building. People were safely escorted from their suites while officers conducted a search of the building for suspects. During the search, three males were taken into custody.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., the search was concluded. Officers obtained and executed a search warrant. A loaded 12 gauge shotgun was located within once the rooms and seized.

Ted John BURZYNSKI,  a 55-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Discharge a Firearm Into or At a Place in a Reckless Manner
  • Possession of a Firearm, Restricted /Prohibited  Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order
  • Possess Weapon

He has been detained.

Weapons — Arrest: C19-72512

On April 6, 2019, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Winnipeg Police received a report of a male armed with a knife, threatening pedestrians in the area of Portage Avenue and Carlton Street. West District officers attended and located the male in the area of Ellice Avenue and Hargrave Street. Upon searching the male, a folding knife was found on his person.

It was learned the male was escorted out of Portage Place by two security officers. Once outside he produced a knife and made a threatening gesture towards the security officers. He then walked away and began threatening numerous people with the knife until he was located and arrested by police.

Sandy David BRUCE, a 33-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

  • Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm X2
  • Possess Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

He has been detained.

Firearms — Arrest: C19-71254

On April 5, 2019, at approximately 7:55 a.m., Winnipeg Police received a report of a male armed with a shotgun inside a rooming house in the 400 block of Agnes Street. Central District, Street Crime and Tactical Support Team members responded, and the immediate area was evacuated.

While clearing the residence, Tactical Support Team members located an adult male with an outstanding warrant. Upon searching for additional people, officers located a .22 calibre loaded sawed-off shotgun and ammunition.

A search was later executed at inside the residence and officers located and seized:

  • .22 calibre sawed-off rifle loaded with a 25 round ammunition clip
  • 12 gauge sawed-off shotgun which was found the have been stolen on April 1, 2019, during and break and enter in Winnipeg.
  • 25 rounds of 12 gauge ammunition
  • 20 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition

Adrian Levi SCOTT, a 32-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with:

  • Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regs.
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or restricted Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm, Restricted /Prohibited  Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order X4
  • Possession of a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Obtained by Crime
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order X3
  • Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized X2
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized X2

An outstanding warrant for Fail to Comply with Probation was also executed.

He has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

Commercial Robbery - C19-71780

On April 5, 2019 at approximately 3:18 p.m., the suspect male entered a hotel in the 300 block of Smith Street where he selected 2 sunglasses, numerous lighters and fled the store. The security guard was alerted and grabbed hold of the suspect who was armed with a knife. The suspect stabbed the security guard in the hand and fled.

The security guard suffered a minor injury and did not require immediate medical attention.

On the same date at approximately 6:23 p.m., the same suspect male attended to a store in the 700 block of Sherbrook Street with an unknown male. The suspect selected a bottle of shampoo and walked out of the store. An employee followed the suspect and attempted to retrieve the stolen shampoo when the suspect slashed the employee cutting him in the wrist. Both males fled.

The employee was transported to hospital in stable condition and treated for his injuries.

A short time later, Police observed the suspect walking in the area of Cumberland Avenue and Hargrave Street and he was taken into custody.

Justin Seth SHORTING, a 26-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

  • Theft Under $5000 x2
  • Possession of a Weapon x2
  • Assault with a Weapon X2
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Recognizance x2

He was detained in custody.

Aggravated Assault - C19-72871

On April 7th, 2019 at approximately 1:37 a.m., Winnipeg Police responded to the 300 block of York Avenue for a report of an assault.

A 56-year-old male was located suffering from stab wounds to the upper body. He was transported to the hospital where he received more than 50 stitches and staples to close his wounds.

The victim advised that he met the suspect earlier in the evening and proceeded to socialize with the male in a suite at this location. After a brief time, the suspect, without provocation, attacked the victim with a beer bottle, smashing it over the victim's head. He then stabbed the victim numerous times in the upper body. The suspect stole the victim's bag and fled.

Officers quickly located the suspect in the 100 block of Hargrave and placed him under arrest.

Jared GERLINGER, a 21-year-old male of Brandon, Manitoba has been charged with:

  • Robbery
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Fail to Comply with a Condition of his Recognizance

He has been detained in custody.
