Homicide – Update/Arrest: C19-80009
On April 15, 2019, at approximately 11:10 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a lounge in the 300 block of Pembina Highway for a report of two males that had been stabbed.
Upon arrival, two adult males were located suffering from serious injuries. One male was transported to hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries. The other male was transported to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable condition.
The deceased victim has since been identified as Yazan Alhorani, a 20-year-old male of Winnipeg.
Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation. It is believed that a dispute inside the establishment escalated to a physical altercation at which time the two victims were stabbed.
On April 16, 2019, at approximately 3:15 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police stopped an eastbound vehicle on Highway 17A east of Kenora and placed a male suspect under arrest. The male was turned over to the Winnipeg Police Service and transported back to Winnipeg.
Mahfuthmm Assi, a 20-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Second Degree Murder
- Attempted to Commit Murder

Suspicious Death – Investigation: C19-82183
On April 18, 2019, at approximately 3:10 a.m., emergency personnel responded to the area of the rail line in the 1000 block of Selkirk Avenue for a report of a male that had been seriously assaulted.
Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male. The male was transported to hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced deceased.
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
