PROJECT RETURN

The Winnipeg Police Service's Counter Exploitation/ Missing Person's Unit, and General Patrol Members from Central Division 11,  in partnership with Outreach Workers from the Community in Winnipeg  (StreetReach, Winnipeg Outreach Network (WON), Resources Assistance for Youth (RAY), Ma Ma Wi Chi Itata, and the Bear Clan Patrol Inc.) initiated a Joint Project from Friday, April 26, 2019 to Sunday April 28, with the aim of protecting youth within our city who are at a high risk of being sexually exploited.

The result of this Project Return are:

  • 21 reported missing,  at risk youths were located. Each were transported to a place of safety .
  • 17 locations, known to be frequented by high risk missing youths, were checked.
  • 7 males arrested between ages of 18-55 for Obtaining Sexual Services for Consideration.
  • 2 additional arrests including an outstanding Warrant for Arrest.
  • 7 Vehicles seized under the Highway Traffic Act for Prostitution offences.
  • 3 Deter and Indentify Sex-Trade Consumers (D.I.S.C.) Stops were conducted.
  • 108 Crime Prevention through Social Development (CPTSD) contacts were made to identify and assist those involved in sexual exploitation. These contacts included issuing 45 harm reduction kits and providing 20 safe rides.

Our commitment to issues surrounding our missing youth and those at risk of sexual exploitation in the community will continue.

15th Annual Winnipeg Police Service Half Marathon, 2-Person Relay and 5K race!

On Sunday, May 5th, come cheer on 2900 runners in this year’s 15th annual
Winnipeg Police Service Half Marathon, 2-Person Relay and 5K race!

Whether they’re running to beat their time, to honour a loved one or to show cancer who's boss; our runners have their heads in the right place.

The event will again be operating as a 3rd party fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. With this year's event we are on track to surpass 2 million dollars raised for the Canadian Cancer Society – Manitoba.

All monies raised from this year’s event will be going to the Canadian Cancer Society in support of brain cancer research.  The money will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by Brain Canada through the Canada Brain Research Fund, a public-private partnership established by the Government of Canada.

Brain cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths among youth and young adults. The overall survival rate for all cancers is 63%, while the relative survival rate of brain cancer is 25%.  Brain cancer represents some of the most aggressive forms of cancer, making it difficult to destroy.

The event is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. in front of the baseball diamonds in Assiniboine Park. The 5K will take off at 8:10 a.m. Both starts will enjoy an exciting send-off with a fly-past of a Canadian Forces C130 Hercules aircraft.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s helicopter, AIR1, will be on site for public viewing.
Members of the public are invited to cheer runners on along the route or at the finish line. Supporters are welcome to join in the pancake breakfast at the race site through a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

-     Westbound Wellington Crescent from Guelph Street to the Assiniboine Park is closed 6:00 am until 11:00 am (no parking on the closed portions of Wellington Crescent)
-     Northbound Park Boulevard North to Wellington Crescent is closed from 6:00 am until 11:00 am (no parking on Park Boulevard North, north of Corydon Avenue)
