Homicide – Investigation/Arrest: C19-103243
On May 11, 2019, at approximately 12:00 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a rear lane near Burrows Avenue and Albina Way for a report of an assault.
Upon arrival, officers located both a suspect and an injured unresponsive male. The suspect was taken into custody, and the injured male was transported to hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Calvin Chan, a 66-year-old male of Winnipeg.
Members of the Homicide Unit continued with the investigation. It is believed that the deceased victim, along with a neighbour, had been attempting to back a boat into a garage when the suspect attempted to drive the rear lane and an argument ensued. The victim was subsequently assaulted and sustained a serious injury.
Dennis Lloyd Jr. Penner, a 24-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Manslaughter
He was detained in custody.
Drug Offences – Arrests: R19-24790
During the evening of May 12, 2019, members of the Guns and Gangs Unit, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team and Central District Community Support Unit, executed Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrants at two residences – one in the Sturgeon Creek neighbourhood and another in the Wolseley neighbourhood.
Two individuals were taken into custody, and an investigation has led to the seizure of many items including the following:
Residence in the Sturgeon Creek neighbourhood
- Approximately 9 ounces of cocaine (estimated street value of $18,000)
- Approximately 1 kilogram of methamphetamine (estimated street value of $20,000)
- Approximately 6.5 ounces of methamphetamine (estimated street value of $4,500)
- Approximately 83 ounces of a substance believed to be a cutting agent
- Various packaging materials
- Two digital scales
- Mixing equipment
- A vacuum Sealer
Residence in the Wolseley neighbourhood
- Approximately 3.5 grams of cocaine (estimated street value of $250)
- Four 1-gram packages of cocaine (estimated street value of $400)
- Approximately 45 grams of methamphetamine (estimated street value of $1,000)
- Approximately $21,000 in Canadian currency
Sage Lee Kehler, a 29-year-old female of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
Erkan Kalkan, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
- Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
They were detained in custody.
