Assault/Disarm Police Officer – Arrest: C19-156713
On July 7, 2019, at approximately 8:45 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a residence in the first 100 block of Guay Avenue for a report of people fighting.
Upon arrival, officers located a male lying on the front steps. Residents of the house indicated the male was injured, and as officers attempted to check on his well-being, he became violent.
The male charged and punched an officer, causing the officer to fall to the ground. He then attempted to disarm the officer of their firearm. A conducted electrical weapon (“Taser”) was used to take the male into custody. The male was taken to hospital and later spit in the face of an officer.
Joey Wesley Sumner, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Assault a Peace Officer (x2)
- Resist Peace Officer
- Disarming a Peace Officer
He was detained in custody.
Shooting – Investigation: C19-157174
On July 7, 2019, at approximately 9:05 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a community centre in the 1100 block of Corydon Avenue for a report of gunshots.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
